Russian Defense Expert Analyzes the Drone Revolution

Translated excerpts from a new piece published by Russian state media on the drone revolution written by Ruslan Pukhov, Director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

“…as the element base becomes miniaturized and cheaper, the combat operations will increasingly acquire the form of the actions of incredible hordes of drones of the most diverse types, shapes, sizes and purposes (but mostly smaller and cheaper), and at the same time more and more long-range and autonomous, which will become the main means of war…”

“The battlefield and the rear for tens of kilometers will become a total “kill zone” in which drones will destroy everything. Accordingly, another negotiable key type of combat will be countering drones and clearing the sky from them. Thus, the armed struggle will take place in the form of a struggle for “drone fire superiority”, and only the achievement of such superiority will make it possible for one of the parties to advance territorially.”

“…One of the most important consequences of the “drone revolution” was the unprecedented transparency of the battlefield, in fact, the complete disappearance of the “fog of war”, and this transparency will grow rapidly due to the development of both drone and space…”

“…The main blow of the ongoing information revolution in military affairs, demonstrated during the special operation, was the introduction and mass use of the global public Internet based on the Starlink system. For the first time in history, Starlink has implemented a publicly available and at the same time fast and sufficiently secure information network, allowing global connection of all “units”, which provides communication and control regardless of range. The latter became revolutionary for the control of UAVs, allowing for the first time to massively ensure the use of even small drones at a theoretically unlimited range.”

“I will risk making a forecast: the next blow of the information revolution on this track will be the integration of satellite and network cellular solutions, allowing to ensure global satellite information exchange through a conventional mobile phone and corresponding ultra-small devices. This will lead to a further explosive expansion of the information connectivity of the armed forces, including direct information “connection” of each serviceman on the battlefield, super-miniaturization of systems using unlimited control (including UAVs and high-precision weapons), and will dramatically increase the possibilities of “remote” warfare.”

“…It can be assumed that the trends that have emerged in the coming decade will receive an increasingly accelerating development, radically changing the face of military affairs.”
