High-sucrose diets contribute to psychosis-related higher brain dysfunctions in mice
“Here, we demonstrate that a high-sucrose diet during adolescence induces psychosis-related behavioral endophenotypes, including hyperactivity, poor working memory, impaired sensory gating, and disrupted interneuron function in mice deficient for glyoxalase-1 (GLO1), an enzyme involved in detoxification of sucrose metabolites. Furthermore, the high-sucrose diet induced microcapillary impairments and reduced brain glucose uptake in brains of Glo1-deficient mice.”
Sugar targets gut microbe linked to lean and healthy people
“They found that both fructose and glucose, which together form sucrose, block the production of a key protein called Roc, which is required for colonization of this beneficial bacterium in the gut.”
Dietary sugar linked to bacterial epidemics
The increasing frequency and severity of healthcare-associated outbreaks caused by bacterium Clostridium difficile have been linked to the widely used food additive trehalose. A team of researchers discovered that in laboratory tests and animal models, trehalose enhances the virulence of epidemic C. difficile lineages that predominate in patient infections.
Sugar industry sponsorship of germ-free rodent studies linking sucrose to hyperlipidemia and cancer
“The sugar industry did not disclose evidence of harm from animal studies that would have (1) strengthened the case that the CHD risk of sucrose is greater than starch and (2) caused sucrose to be scrutinized as a potential carcinogen.”
Both sugary, diet drinks correlated with accelerated brain aging
“Researchers using data from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) found that people who drink sugary beverages frequently are more likely to have poorer memory, smaller overall brain volume, and a significantly smaller hippocampus.”
High-sugar diet programs a short lifespan in flies
“Even while feeding on a healthy diet, the flies that had previously eaten a high-sugar diet started to die earlier, and on average had 7% shorter lifespans. This was caused by a change in the programming of the flies’ physiology caused by the sugar-rich diet eaten in early adulthood.”
How the sugar industry has distorted health science for more than 50 years
“Through an examination of archival documents, the JAMA paper shows how a sugar trade association helped boost the hypothesis that eating too much saturated fat was the major cause of the nation’s heart problems, while creating doubt about the evidence showing that sugar could be a culprit too.”
